Adventure India

India is land of mystery and confusion. It's technologically advanced in some places and primitive in other places. Massive poverty, heavy pollution, lots of cows, parades, weddings, parties and crowded trains and buses.

I would say that if you have never been to somewhere "really" busy and about as far away as you could possibly be from "Western Culture" India would take some getting used to. People will try to scam you all the time, but at least they do it with a smile.

Luckily I had quite a ramp up period before coming to India. Eastern Europe, Turkey, Egypt then India made the transition in to the new hectic India very easy. The only thing that I thought was odd was the cows, but soon they just blend in to the chaos too. I hope you don't mind cockroaches and little lizards :)

Golden Triangle - Check

Ken and the Taj Mahal
Originally uploaded by kden604.

So I've now completed the "Golden Triangle" (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) and I'm having a blast! I'm sitting at an Internet Cafe in Jaipur right now trying to upload over 200 back logged photos. Ouch.

This picture on this post is of me at the Taj Mahal. The weather cleared up quite literally for 2 hours that day, which was when I took my photos, I got pissed on the whole rest of the day...

Yesterday morning I boarded a bus at 0600 for Jaipur from Agra, its a 4.5 hour ride and cost 159 Rupees. The bus was decent, you would say it is almost the same as most "western" buses.

As we approached Jaipur there is two bus stops prior to the primary bus station, at these stops people will come on to the bus and try to get tourists off the bus at this point. Whatever you do, don't get off the bus until the actual bus terminal, which has about 40 buses, proper ticket booths and tourist information office. Apparently it's a big scam to pull tourists off the bus and then charge them a crazy amount to get in to the "REAL" centre of town, which is a good 15-20 minutes longer on the bus. Either that, or they will try and get you in to a hotel in the middle of no-where (in terms of touristy stuff).

Anyways, I got off the bus at the proper stop, the bus station, bought my ticket back to Agra for this Friday and decided to go try and find a hotel. I was feeling lazy so I wanted something near to the bus station, which would make my life easier when I needed to leave really early on Friday morning too.

I have to give a really big plug to the "Hotel City Centre" which is literally 3 minutes from the station. As you exit the station you are facing a main street, go to the right and walk until you get to the first alley on your right hand side. There is an internet cafe/hotel on the corner of the alley. Walk up the alley about 200-250 metres and you are there.

Hotel City Centre
46, Hathi Babu Ka Bagh, Vivek Nagar
Near Sindhi Camp, Station Road,
Jaipur
Phone 1: 2205852
Phone 2: 2205853

The rooms are acceptable in cleanliness, there is a little porch outside of your room, bathroom in room, TV in room. This might sound like most other places... BUT WAIT, here is the best part. REAL hot water! Not just the luke warm/not cold water... but water that is so hot you need to turn on the cold faucet to chill it a bit! I had a 20 minute shower this morning because I in such bliss of not having to do the warm water bucket over the head method.

The price of the hotel was 300 Rupees per night, I would have paid that just for the shower this morning.

Also, through the hotel you can book a auto-rickshaw who will take you out to all the attractions and just be your driver for the day for 270 Rupees. If you want just a few of the attractions you could get cheaper, but for the whole day, to see whatever you like... I think it's a good deal.

So what did I do today...

Amber Palace and Fort
Water Palace
Royal Gaitors
Golimar Gardens
Observatory (Jantar Mantar)
Hawa Mahal
The City Zoo
Wandering Pink City (Yesterday)

I thought about doing the museum, but I was getting tired and I just couldn't take another museum right now.

Amber Fort & Palace are really magnificent to see, they are about 11 km outside of Jaipur and is perched on the slopes of the local mountains. There are long walls going up all the slopes at it makes me think of the Great Wall of China. The Palace itself has this beautifully mirrored audience hall and behind it a superbly manicured garden with fountains. Amber Fort is up on the hill and there are several ways to get up there: Walking (7-8 minutes), Elephant Ride 300-400 Rupees, Jeep 150 Rupees. The Entrance fee with a still camera to the site is 75 Rupees.

The Water Palace was under a lot of renovations when I arrived, and the lake that is supposed to be around it was pretty dry and there was lots of mud. Inside the Palace you can see massive trees growing out the top and it looks really wonderful.

Royal Gaitors - These shrines to royalty are just beautiful, made of marble and are incredibly detailed. There are some slabs of marble that are just massive and the amount of work that would have gone in to one single piece is just mind boggling. I don't think a lot of tourists actually go to this site, I was the only person in when I was there, and only saw one other couple entering while I was leaving. Well worth the 10 Rupees... There is a guide who will explain stuff for 50 Rupees if you like, well worth the money.

Observatory - This site is strange and cool. There are these MASSIVE devices created to be able to tell you about stars, time, and just incredible details about astrology and the path of stars in the night sky. Their version of the sundials is just fantastic, and there is some really large ones that I'm sure are at least 6 stories high. I really suggest getting a guide for this, the signs are really crappy at this sight and the guides explain things very well. Quiz him and talk to him in english to make sure you can understand him and he knows how to express himself well in english.

Jaipur Zoo - Lions, Tigers, Crocodiles... Oh My! Ok, I haven't been to a zoo in quite a few years, but I really enjoyed seeing some of these animals. I have to admit I'm not to keen on seeing animals locked up, but there seems to be breeding programs and such which are necessary to keep the various populations alive after poaching and such. ANYWAYS - The Tigers are fantastic, the White Tiger is so cool, first one I've seen that wasn't with those guys from Vegas and the pool of Crocodiles were really the highlight.... Sadly, not too many monkeys =(

Hawa Mahal - This was some sort of complex where one of the ruler locked up all his women... they weren't allowed out in public so he made this big tall temple with little windows so they could watch life go by. I went to this in the morning at 0900 when it opened, however because the "front" of the building where you climb up is facing East, it would be better to come in the evening so you could get better lighting. Everything was far too bright taking pictures in to the sun.

Well this pretty much sums up my Jaipur experiences, The whole Pink City is basically one giant retail area... lots of things to buy, divied up in to areas where certain types of products can be found. I'm not much in to shopping so it didn't interest me too much.

PS - I saw more elephants today than I've seen in all the shiner circus(es?) that I've seen in my life. They were all beautifully painted with colourful chalks and it looked really cool.

Agra India

Wow, Where to start!

The past few days have been a whirl-wind of exciting times. There was a large masonic gathering in Delhi for the installation of the new regional grand master of northern India. I won't be getting in to details on this blog about the events but I will be on my "On The Level" blog (but not today).

Each day was so full of meeting wonderful brethren and their families as well as some exceptionally fine foods!

Bro Sunil has been such a wonderful host while I've been in Delhi and has been taking me to clubs and resturants and introducing me to Brethren from across India.

Yesterday was the last day of the festival and Sunil, his family, some friends from the UK and myself went out for some Chinese food in the Defense Colony area which was very tasty. It's neat because in India there is two distinct classes of foods, veg and non-veg and the two are always kept totally separate...

This morning I headed to Agra on the train, which I have to say was very posh... compared to the last few trains I travelled on in Egypt. There was tea served with breakfast and you also got a bottle of water. The train was a tad late leaving but only a few minutes. I think we arrived in Agra at shortly after 0830.

I met a guy named Adam, an American who is in to Indian history and he seemed a bit lost =) So he came along to the same hotel and was able to get the same cheap rate, thanks to yet another brother who arranged accomodations for me before I arrived!

After dropping the bags off and having a wonderfully luke warm bucket style shower/bath Adam and I headed down to Agra Fort. The site is really beautiful, and one large court yard and public audience hall was probably the highlight for me. I got some really cute photos of some chipmonks and birds that may or may not be parrots... they are green and look like a parot, but I'm no bird guru so I really don't know.

You could just see the Taj Mahal through the foggy haze from Agra Fort... It's cloudy today and a little bit dreary... I have high hopes that the sky will clear during the evening as I intend to wakeup around 5am and be at the entrance gate for 6am to the Taj Mahal to try and get some sunrise photos. Or at least some nice colours reflecting off the building.

Tonight I'll be meeting Bro Porushesh this evening and we are going to take a look at the Lodge building here in Agra! Wonderful!

Internet cafe has software restrictions and I can't upload photos from here, plus its pretty slow. So sad.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

This morning the first thing that I did was head to the delhi railway ticket reservation office to book my monday ticket to Agra... it's really crazy busy there and it turns out I don't have to even go there. So I was standing in line waiting to get my ticket when this guy behind me says, "why are you waiting here?" my typical canadian answer is something to the effect of "eh? huh?"

All foreiners and non-resident Indias can go directly to the new delhi railway station, go up on the first floor of the building to the tourist ticket office and enjoy a much more comfortable atmosphere with fully english speaking staff and comfortable chairs. sweet.

So I've booked for Monday 12 Feb 07 to Agra at 0600 HRS on the 2002 Shatabdi Express at a cost of 375 Rupees. The train takes approx 2-2.5 hours. Schweet. (don't forget your passport when going to this office)

So with my grubby little hands happily on my freshly printed ticket I decided to head down towards Rashtrapati Bhavan aka the Presidential House. I saw it from far away when I went to India Gate and the National Museum the other day but I wanted to head back and check it out further.

The presidential house, north/south secretariat blocks, and parks with fountains all around that area are just beautiful... they are well manicured and I really enjoyed walking around snapping pictures. I was there around lunch time and all the locals who work in the buildings sleep, relax, and chat with friends on the lawns and it seems like a really cool atmosphere.

After indulging myself in enough photos for the day I headed back to Connaught Place where I decided to check out the Palika Bazar... Its this cool underground bazar that twists and turns in circles all over the place. There are some really neat shops, lots of great deals and people who will bargin hard to get your business. Leather products, CDs/DVD/XXX/Video Games are a major portion of this bazar... Most are probably illegal copies so don't pay too much (officially piracy is bad, don't do it...) I also found a few really cheap book stores, brand new main stream books selling for between 70-250 Rupees.

So that pretty much brings me to now, I headed back to the hotel, found some food, took some pictures of rupees, and am blogging. Tonight there is a jackie chan movie on TV that I want to watch at 9pm so that is pretty much the plan tonight.

Tomorrow starts the big masonic events so I'm not sure if I will be posting tomorrow or not... Should be quite busy for the next couple days, then travel to Agra so I might be offline.

I also need to wish my Grand Mother (Grams) a happy birthday! It was actually on the 8th, but I was pretty sick and wasn't really able to call or e-mail my parents.

Safe in India

Well after a huge day of travel I'm now happily in New Delhi!

The flight from Cairo to Amman was great, sort-of... I had my new head pillow (Thanks Dan) and seriously fell asleep and don't recall the plane leaving the ground... That's some deep sleep.

I was awakened by the stewardess with some food and tea and things were going great until this kid a few rows over did some projectile puking... It was disgusting!

Arrived in Amman and anyone flying with Royal Jordanian Airlines with a six hour layover or more is entitled to a free hotel room and transit visa to leave the airport for the day. Cool.

Long airplane ride to New Delhi, couldn't sleep... ATM at airport in Delhi was messed up so I converted some of my small foreign bills at the money exchanger to get me started.

Prepaid taxi to hotel area was cheap and I've got a room with bathroom, tv, fridge for 300 Rs a night (about 8 dollars canadian).

I bought a box of water (12Litres x 12) for 120 Rs which I think is decent.. I slept from 7am to 5pm and now I'm just on the hunt to find laundry services costs and some food etc.

Blog more later.
