Sleeper Trains Greece to Turkey

My First Sleeper Room!
Originally uploaded by kden604.
One of my most memorable moments was getting on my first sleeper train. I had the entire room to myself and I was able to fully enjoy the experience without some random stranger.

My travel started about 8:30pm in Thessaloníki Greece and was destined for Istanbul Turkey. The cost of the ticket was 50 Euro, but I considered it both transportation and a nights accommodation so really it wasn't "too" expensive.

As you can see the cabin was very small, two beds per cabin. If you are the only passenger you can fold up the top bunk to make the room seem larger. There is a small sink, garbage can, and electrical outlet for charging your mobile or shaving.

The problem with the Greece to Turkey run is that around 2AM you are going to be abruptly woken up by the conductor as he gathers up the passports with the borders guards. You are required to do this twice, first the train is inspected by the Greek officials, this takes about 20 minutes on average. Then the train moves for a few minutes and goes to the Turkish border inspectors, this takes a while to handle as many people have to purchase their visa stamps and it's a slow process.

You must pay for your visa in hard currency. US Dollars or Euros are acceptable. I've heard from some travelers that Turkish border guards sometimes would only accept US Dollars, despite their governments website stating they take Euros also.

After nearly two hours of sitting in the foggy night we were back on the move. You sleep for a couple more hours then the sun comes up and you get the most magnificent view of the mosque minarets as the train chugs down the tracks on it's way to Istanbul.

I arrived about 2 hours late in Istanbul at about 10am, disembarked the train and headed towards the blue mosque area. The cheap hostels and primary tourist area of Istanbul is located in the Sultanahmet area about 7-8 minutes walk from the train station (European side train station). You have two options, either walk and enjoy the view, or jump on the tram for two stops. If you want to find the blue mosque, simply follow the tram lines "UP" the hill as opposed to "DOWN" towards the water. It'll be on your left side.

Cheap hostels are all in behind the 4 Seasons Hotel.

Adventure Turkey

Turkey was an amazing adventure, but not at all what I had expected. I guess when I was growing up I had this mystical middle eastern imagine of a primitive country, arid and lots of camels, tents and carpets. The truth is Istanbul is one of the most thriving cities I've had the pleasure of visiting, of course the fact it was the first fast Internet I had made it a real joy for me.

I love that Turks eat lots of meat. I love the friendly people (except the carpet dealers) and famous Turkish hospitality. Getting the hell beaten out of me like WWF in a Turkish bathhouse has an interesting experience too.

Post Office Woes

Bosphorus Ferry Tour

So I was down at the post office this morning and trying to mail two packages. One was a telephone to Kadir in Ankara that I borrowed and the other was some misc trinkets and stuff for my parents.

First thing to know is that the Turkish Post Office inspects all packages. They go through them and open everything.

Spice Baazar package not allowed.
Turkish Delight... not allowed??
20 Euro worth of coins and bills that I've gathered through Eastern Europe... Nope... Can't send any currency in the mail.

To top it off I accidently dropped something and it smashed on the marble floor... it was quite cheap but still I thought it was annoying considering I only purchased it 20 minutes prior.

So my package ended up being less than great.... Consider half of its contents couldn't be mailed. As for the mobile, luckily I have friends here that can send it... Why can they send it?? Beats me.

But not to dwell on the post office I bought some worry beads today... haha I got a set and also got a giant set for my Dad, they are a cool hobby to spin them around when you are bored or just a trinket in the hand.

I purchased these PRIOR to going to the post office lol... I didn't run out and get them afterwards.

I'm going to meet Semih in about an hour in Taksim so I am already here, just killing time for a little while and having this sugar bread thing.

Tonight I'll go over to the four seasons later in the evening and say goodbye to all of the friends I've made there and perhaps share in a toast of raki.

Day of Cats

She is always late...

Today I wandered around the city and just took a few pictures... again trying to improve my photos by taking "nice" once instead of just "everything"... I think the highlight of the day was this cat who was sitting at the table waiting to be served at an open air cafe. Or perhaps the sad little Cobble Stone Kitten who was in pretty bad shape... really skinny and looking for a meal.

I went down to this great little fresh fruit juice place and had a freshly squeezed orange juice for 1 TYL and also a freshly squeezed Pomegranate juice for 3 TYL. Ok to be honest Pomegranate is a bit bitter and it burned because my throat was raw from coughing too much.... but I needed to get some healthy stuff in to me to get over this cold... I feel much better today actually, but I'll be happy when I am feeling good again.

I've gotten a number of small sicknesses since I've been in turkey... Stomach problems for a few days in Ankara and now this cold... It's not bad though I've been very lucky the last time I was ill was back in Holland with a cold.

Time seems to be moving really slow now because I'm excited about going to Egypt... It's like when you are young waiting for Christmas day... it takes forever before it arrives.

Back In Istanbul

Çanakkale Harbour Sunset

After many hours on a bus today I am back in Istanbul!

It was already early afternoon by the time I got off the bus and almost dusk before I was checked in to a Hostel. I tried to get in the Antique Hostel again but it was booked so I am across the street at another one.

I went and snapped a few more shots of town and then went inside the Blue Mosque for a look around. It was a lot more busy now that when I left a couple of weeks ago.

Tomorrow I am going to meet up with Bro Semih and drink some Raki among other things... If you recall on the blog I met him last in Ankara with Bro Kadir.

I went to find some sort of meat for dinner tonight so I tried another Ayran... For some reason this one tasted better... Perhaps it takes a little getting used to. I havent been eating really healthy so I am trying to get more fruit and dairy stuff in me from time to time... I think Ayran is quite healthy, its just yogurt and water.

Not much to say today, just sat on a bus... Got to take another ferry ride... Took some pictures... That pretty much sums up my day. Need to go pick up my laundry from the cleaners a little later... highlight of the evening! hehe

Troy / Truva, Turkey

Çanakkale Harbour Sunset

Today was a good day... Starting with a hot shower at the Anzac Hotel and Chocco-Puffs type cereal, no olives and cheese for me!

I decided to go for a walk to the minibus station this morning to catch a bus to Truva (troy) which was beautiful.... It rained hard all night and the morning was clean and fresh with thunder and lightening in the far away sky but blue overhead.

Prices for Troy break down like this...
Organized Tour 36 TYL
Self Tour 3.50 TYL (each way transport) + 10 TYL Entrance Fee

The organized tour would be a massive waste of money because to be honest I was really disappointed with the Truva Ruins. I am extremely glad that I had the opportunity to see Efes (Ephesus) and Hierapolis because they blow Troy away.

I met an interesting American guy and Irish girl on the minibus back to Çanakkale and they ended up coming back to the same hotel, because I am such an expert at local hotels now after yesterdays audit.

I ended up spending the afternoon wandering the harbour and snapping photos. I did a bunch of reading on photographic compositon and how to take nicer photos. What do you think? I have been trying to do the 1/3 rule and all that fancy jazz. Took about 10 photos at the harbour trying to be artsy.

After the sunset was over I headed back to the hote and met the couple for Dinner... we went out to a local resturaunt and had steak, if you can call it that... perhaps beef cutlette would be more appropriate... and tough chunk of meat would perhaps be even closer to the truth. BUT there was Tuborg beer on tap which generally I dont care for, but its been a while since I have had good beer and this was the nearest thing to it.

Then it was off to the Internet cafe to upload pictures. I am fond of the Virus Internet Cafe who has a nice stylish place a couple blocks from the main drag... Good PCs, nice owner and decent speed.

I saw something pretty sad today while snapping photos down at the harbour... There was a street cat with a fish hook and weight hanging from its mouth. It was in pretty rough shape and one of the locals tried to catch it to take the hook out but it kept hiding in the rocks.

Tomorrow I will be heading back to Istanbul... I really like Istanbul but I am looking forward to getting on to Egypt.

Check in tomorrow or later from the hotel (email I mean).

Rss feeds

So tonight I wrote down all my favourite blog rss feeds and added them to my palmpilot... Imp, ROK, Kiwi, JaG I can read you semi-regular again... Yay me.

I'm so tired from walking today, I estimate I walked twenty KM, with hills that always seemed to require walking up.

I saw an escaped horse today too... Had his head harness thingy (yes, that is the technical term for that device --farmer ken) and a long rope pissing him off something fierce. He was bolting up and down the roads and had me a little concerned when he got close... Luckily my masculine Canadian beard and the scent of maple syrup must have scared him off.

I must be tired because that was a horrible joke... Seriously the horse thing happened though.

Ps I just realized the main beer in turkey is 'Efes' which is the ruins I am at, though I don't think its brewed here. I'm sorry turkey, your beer isn't great, but your raki is divine.

Whirling Dervishes

Whirling Dervishes

Yesterday I met up with Zeliha and her family in Konya and got to learn a lot about local food and culture. I also went to a mosque twice during prayer which is a much different experience than going when it is quiet.

Just after we met it was time for afternoon prayer so we went to one of the newer mosques in Konya. Because males and females pray separately we had to go to different entrances and while I was looking around a gentleman inside grabbed my arm and took me up to the front and centre where the prayers go on. It was very neat going through the motions, as I said it was the first time I had seen it before.

After that we headed to dinner out at a restaurant and we ate mithat tirit which is a bread with meat and tomato then you add on other stuff from communial dishes at the table. The bread is made inside a giant woodburning oven and tastes wonderful. After we ate I also took some pictures of the cooks making the bread and putting it in the oven. I also drank a drink that is made from yogurt and water, it isnt my kind of drink but I think if I lived here a while it would grow on you. Its a little bitter, but supposedly very healthy and good for digestion while eating meat.

The highlight of the night was certainly seeing the Whirlimg Dervishes, which is a very impressive show. Everyone is spinning in a trance like state for long periods of time with their eyes closed and never touch each other, despite the fact they are also moving in a large circle as a group. Its really very beautiful to see. They spin with right hand palm up to get goodness from god and their left palm downwards giving the goodness to the world.

This morning we went to Sille and had a wonderful breakfast in a very old traditional house with many interesting artifacts on display. The food was great and blue cheese was a fırst for me... Its very good, I have eaten it in salad dressings but never in actual chunks of cheese.

We saw the town of Sille and drove around other places in Konya also, all the while snapping pictures along the way. It made a huge difference knowing someone here, you learn so much more and I think I asked about a hundred questions about Islam and Mosques and Culture here. Thank you so much Zeliha it was wonderful meeting you and your family and I really appreciate all the information you shared.

This morning when I woke up there was a note taped to my door from my three Korean friends I met and travelled with since Cappadocia, just to say goodbye because they left very early and perhaps we would meet again in Denizly, the town I am heading to tomorrow.

Hope to see you there Min Su, Yu Ri, and Peel Young!

It was too funny fittıng all four of us in the backseat of the car on the way back from the Dervishes =)

Some Quotes from Mevlana

Come, Come Again, Whoever, Whatever you may be come; Heathen, Fire Worshiper, Sinful of Idolatry Come. Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred tımes, ours ıs not the portal of despair and mısery, come.

Either seem as you are, Or be as you seem.

When we are dead, do not turn your eyes to the ground, seeking my grave! My grave will be in the hearts of the wise.
