Palolem Beach, Goa, India

Goa. Palolem.

Palolem beach is by far one of the most magical beaches in India and certainly the finest in Goa. Several kilometers of beautiful soft sand beaches lined with coco-huts, palm trees and beautiful women. If there is a closer place to Heaven in India, I haven't found it yet.

I liked to start my mornings by getting up around 7AM then throwing on a swim suit and heading for a nice relaxing swim in the ocean. You will see a few early morning types, enthusiastic joggers and people practicing yoga on the beach. But for the most part Goa doesn't really wake up until 8:30am.

Goa Shack

There is a lot of different kinds of sleeping arrangements in Palolem, but if you have travelled all the way to India you might as well set yourself right on the beach. Or at least within a few meters of it. For between 250-600 rupees a day you can find yourself in a nice little coco-hut. They really range in quality, but the average ones come with a rudimentary washroom, a double bed and for goodness sake make sure there is a mosquito netting over it.

After finding some cheap places to sleep the next thing on your agenda should be to have some great food. While your waiting for your food, why not take the some to enjoy covering a dog in sand, Why? Why not?

The beach is lined with restaurants and seafood is always fresh. If you aren't really in to experiencing the local foods then Palolem offers a really large selection of foods to suit the western palette. One word of advice for those with food allergies, nuts and seafood touch nearly everything in a kitchen and it's a constant concern when you are eating out. Make sure you let the staff know that you can't eat certain foods or you might regret it!

Crazy Guy

A walk down the beach is always a great way to burn off all that energy from drinking beer and laying around in the sun. There are more than a few people trying to sell you things as you walk and it's a bit annoying. Be warned there is quite a few beggars and scam artists but for the most part it is quite safe. Watch out for the "ear cleaning men" they are well renowned pick-pockets, not just in Palolem but around India.

Palolem is a great place to just relax and chill. Most people, including myself, plan on staying a few days or a week, but miraculously end up spending 2-3 weeks or more enjoying the scenery.

If you get tired of laying on the beach and swimming then I would suggest heading down south to the next couple of beaches, North and South Pantem. It's another beautifully long beach with a more quiet charm of it's own. The South Pantem beach (two beaches south) takes about 25 minutes to get to but has some really wonderful waves which are amazing for body surfing or boogy boarding. Unfortunately there is an expensive hotel who monopolizes this beach and you need to bring your own food and drink, or risk paying outrageous (near western) prices!

If body surfing isn't your thing, dolphin and finish tours can be quite affordable. You really need to bargain with the boat owners because they will take you for all your worth if you let them. If you are a group of 4, don't pay more than 200 rupees each. If you try hard you should be able to pay 100 per person. Some owners give you a boat rate which you can divide by as many people as you like, or a per person rate.

The cows

After a day of fun and excitement in the sun, why not relax and watch the cows enjoying the sunset. The cows are very interesting in Goa, quite often I've gotten up very early and just before or during sunrise they walk down to the beach from "somewhere." Then ritualisticly just after sunset they reverse their procession and head back away from the beach. I was often tempted to follow them, but I am easily distracted by beer and women.

Once you have had a bit of an early evening siesta, it's time to wake up, have some dinner and about 10-11 PM head down to one of the many bars and clubs. At the far south of Palolem beach there is a rock bluff which houses the Dancing Shiva club, a wonderful party will break out several times a week. Normally someone will pass around flyer's on the beach if something is going on.

For the average night though, Cuba's has a really great feel, lots of people and friendly staff. You can smoke some Sheesha (water pipes) and drink some cold ones.

One criticism of Palolem is that there is music laws. The loud music stops at 1AM. The Dancing Shiva really cools down in a hurry and most people decide to migrate to a pub or restaurants with quieter music but they keep going to 3-5AM.

Palolem is a pretty safe place, I can't recall any stories of people getting robbed or things stolen. If someone is going to take your money in Palolem, it's because you have agreed to a ridiculous price. There is a shady side of Goa too, you can get drugs galore, especially hash., if that is your thing, it's not hard to find and reasonably priced.

More and more Palolem is turning in to a family destination, with higher end accommodations and beach huts that are more acceptable to families with small children. Sadly this increase in quality reduces the cheap accommodations and the backpacker and budget crowed get pushed away to newer, cheaper locations. As the world grows these locations are becoming less and less and the all mighty dollar is taking it's toll on once affordable hot spots.

My advice is not too wait to see the world. Get out there and travel, experience things today in an eco-friendly way, because it just may not be there next year.

Desination Unknown: Palolem Beach India

A few days ago I received an e-mail from a buddy of mine, Michael, whom I met in India. He was playing beach bum along with Allan and also produces an Internet based set of TV Shows called "Destination Unknown."

But I've got a secret, I know his destination this time. Palolem Beach in Goa India! There is a series of about five videos on Palolem and quite a few more on many other world hot spots. Michael Murphy is a world traveler who has been to well over 50 countries. Impressive to say the least and he is a good guy to chill and drink beers with too.

Without making you wait any longer I appeared in one** of his videos. I still had my beard thing at the time and I think I look strange on video, but here it is. I'm around the 1minute 50second mark of the video.

** Actually I appeared in two videos in the Palolem set. Do you know what the other one was??

Packed and Ready

It's my last night in Goa and India for now!

Tomorrow morning at 5am I hop in a Cab and head to the airport... Sri Lanka bound!

Ralph left a couple of days ago, and the girls left a couple hours ago... Everyone is on their way home but me. I have to say it feels pretty nice to have a new destination... Though I really love the beach life here, it was getting old and it was time to move on.

There is one last party at Dancing Shivas, I saw this girl handing out flyers up and down the beach... perhaps there will be some good attendance.

Last night I went to the Cafe Del Mar and it was a really great time... get together before saying goodbye to all of my new German friends.

So... More to post from Sri Lanka tomorrow, there isn't much worth mentioning right now other than the fact I finished reading "Five Point Someone" a funny Indian book about Indias Institute of Technology... And also there is apparently lots of people at my old work using facebook now.

Hi Everyone ;)

Big Waves

Yesterday was pretty sweet... Headed down to Pantem beach, the one with the Big Ass expensive resort... The waves there are always great, especially when the tide is on its way in. Went body surfing for probably four hours with Ralph and the girls.

Took a face plant in the sand once which kind of hurt, but all the naked sunbathing euro-women made me feel a lot better about it.

Picked up my plane tickets this morning, got an e-mail from my good buddy Wyrm and am just generally relaxing.

Finished Captain Courageous by Kipling... I have to say that the book didn't really do it for me, it was a nice story, but one that has been re-hashed in so many ways... Rich kid gets in bad circumstance, lower-class people turn him in to a good person, family of rich kid rewards fishermen... All looks good in the future.

Don't get me wrong, it is well written though... I had to chuckle when Kipling dropped a few Masonic tid-bits not so discreetly.

So this afternoon, around 2pm when the sun isn't quite as hot, I'll head back down to the beach and enjoy the waves again.

I mailed my sleeping bag and some other stuff that was too big in my bag yesterday too, I didn't go to the post office because its in the next town... I used a store on the beach and it cost about $40 for seamailing 4KG to Canada... That is like 1/3 more than it would cost at the post office, but you pay for the store to broker the stuff and make your life easier.

My German vocabulary is growing because I've been hanging out with lots of Germans here... though I'm sad to report it's nothing "good" but extremely amusing. LOL.

Sweet Ass is certainly an import one.

Morning Swim

Last night was a good night, went out to dinner with Ralph and Dave, few beers, saw a giant bat fly through the restaurant! Seriously, it was the size of a small dog.

Normally the bats here are those tiny little black ones that eat bugs, this one was massive. Maybe it was lost, I'd not seen one like it before here.

Anyways, yesterdays big events were eating fresh pineapples and watching coconuts fall from trees in rather close proximity to where I was sitting. I wonder how many people die per year from death by coconut?

Anyways, I was on my way for a shave this morning and thought I'd pop in to see my mail...

I went for a swim at sunrise this morning and it was really quite beautiful seeing the sun through these really patchy clouds, nice light beams shooting all over through a red sky... warm water and beautiful women doing yoga on the beach as a eat breakfast.

It's paradise.

Palolem Dreams

So I am really enjoying my time here in Palolem... and though I know I've been counting down slowly on my website about leaving soon... I think that perhaps I will stay another week.

Well, not perhaps, I will stay another week.

The weather is so beautiful, the palm fringed beaches, beautiful sandy beaches, and lots of interesting people from around the world.

Allen and Mike are headed up to Anjuna for Wednesday Market, then Mike continues on to Mumbai and Allen is returning to here on Sunday and then leaves on Wednesday. So I'll probably stick around until that time, then I'll continue down south more.

About 2/3 finished Dickens' Great Expectations and really enjoying it, I've picked up a couple of Kipling books now which will be next in the queue.

Ok, enough computer time for now.

PS Sorry about the silly Yahoo Footer on these posts, I'm mailing from Yahoo because Google e-mail posting seems to be formatting wrong at the moment and I can't be bothered to fool around with the Character encodings!

What do you get when ...

What do you get when you get people from Canada, France, Ivory Coast, Togo and Brazil in a small Beach community in Goa, India?

A damn good beach party at Dancing Shivas Bar!

Sure there were a few stumbling around drunk German women, some rasta-druggies, and lots and lots of cheap beer.

This morning I woke up early and read and enjoyed the sunrise. After breakfast I went for a swim, I read some more, went boogie boarding, read some more and just finished reading Sir Walter Scotts' "Old Mortality" which I have to say I really enjoyed a lot. In the beginning of the book I found it a tad frustrating trying to learn the old slang speak of the peasant people, but after I got that sorted out I really liked it.

Anyways, I figure another 4-5 days here at the beach, it's just beautiful here. There was a MASSIVE green cricket on my clothesline this morning, it was at least half the size of my hand. I was impressed and took many great photos. Zoomed in so much you can see his little beady eyes.

I'm seriously considering going to the Maldives now too. No visa required for Canadians for stays under 30 days. But I see lots of information about arriving via plane, but not ferry. Planes aren't conducive to my budget.

When I was looking for ferry boats I stumbled on that article from last year about those 50 odd people who died when the ferry got screwed... yep, in the Maldives. Why do I always have to find those articles?

Sorry for slow responses on e-mails, I'm just chilling now and find it difficult to drag myself in to an Internet cafe as frequently as normal.

Goa Bus Adventures

I see this post didn't work... Ugh.. I just looked and saw.

Again, I went from:

Anjuna to Mapsua (7Rs)
Mapsua to Panjim (8Rs)
Panjim to Madgoan (19Rs)
Madgoan to Palolem (25 Rs)

It was surprisingly not too painful a trip from north to south. It was slow, with lots of bus changes, but I never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus. The total distance was perhaps 120km, but with all the buses it took probably 2.5 hours to make the trip.

Palolem is just beautiful, beaches stretch on for kilometers and the white sandy beaches are amazing. There is several other beaches within walking distance, a good nice scene and cheap hotels. I'm staying in a decent room for 200 Rs with private bathroom... It's very spartan but more than acceptable.

I don't feel like re-doing this whole post, it was originally about 2 pages, but now I'm cutting it short.

I've picked up a few books and I'm just chilling, reading and relaxing... Still considering sri lanka as a detour... I'm not sure how to get there. I don't want to fly, and I'm not sure if there is boat service.

There looks like there is a bridge part way down to an island, but I had heard it got messed up in a storm last/two years ago. So if you know anything about how to get to Sri Lanka without the benefit of a plane, let me know.

Thanks!
