Mondo Verde Gardens - Holland

Blue Beauty
Originally uploaded by kden604.
I have been to quite a few Royal Gardens, Botanical Gardens and Private Gardens and generally I have to admit that they don't really make me say, "Wow, now that is beautiful."

"An Expedition in one day: Mondo Verde literally leads you along the continents. Thus Mondo Verde offers you a gigantic tropics hall with many exotic birds, drumming waterfalls, smelling the sultriness of the tropics. Soon afterwards you can take a sip of typical Chianti on the top of a Tuscan hill and overlook the classic statue gardens, the famous Trevi fountain and of course the cypresses. Bellissimo!"

Lush Forest

Recently I had the opportunity to tag along with a group that was heading to the Mondo Verde Gardens near Valkenburg in Holland. It's located about 25 minutes outside of Maastricht in the southern province of Limburg.

I have to say that I was really impressed with this whole series of gardens. Mondo Verde is spread out over 25 hectares and is divided in to a series of different types of garden styles from around the world. As you progress your way through the garden you move from country to country and enjoy all the different flowers and buildings.

The primary gardens are the Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, English, Italian and Moroccan. Additionally there are several other areas such as, "The Desert," "The Tropics," and the impressive 14 metre "Statue of Wood."

My two favourite areas were the Japanese garden which was beautifully landscaped and was an extremely relaxing environment. The other was "The Tropics" which is an indoor green house turned jungle. Lush colourful flowers flowing in every direction, exotic red birds, parrots fly through the air and ponds flow in to small rivers which dance in small waterfalls through the entire area.

Japanese Garden

Then entire garden could easily occupy and entire days, I spend about 4 hours in Mondo Verde and only left because it was getting near closing time. There is several great restaurants to visit, The Tuscan Villa being the most picturesque and beautiful. The terrace gives you a really beautiful view and is often used for weddings, social functions and business meetings.

The Alhambra is a Spanish style restaurant with an interesting architecture. But is really more like an indoor cafe with a water fountain in the centre. Finally there is the Datcha which is really more of a snack or icecream bar.

If you are bringing kids along, there is several play areas as well as an interesting rope drawn raft which will certainly peak their interest, located in the Russian Garden area.

The entire park is also made to accomodate those with physical disabilities. The paths are well maintained and I saw several people with wheelchairs have to problem navigating through the gardens. Additionally there elevators at more difficult spots such as "The Tropics."

The only criticism I have about the park is it's price. The 2007 price list is as follows:

Adults - 15 Euro
65+ - 14 Euro
Children 4-13 - 4 Euro
Family ticket - 33 Euro
Group > 20 Persons - 12 Euro per person
Parking - 3 Euro
Garden Guide and Map - 3 Euro

English Gardens

Personally I think that is a little extreme for the price. It really is quite beautiful, but I think that it was discourage most budget travels such as myself. Even the group rate which I was using was quite a lot to pay. Also Mondo Verde is quite a bit out of the way if you are relying on public transit for cheap travel. The closest city would be to take the train from Maastricht to Valkenburg and then see if there is a local bus or taxi from there.

If you are interested gardening or just appreciate the work and effort put in to it, I would highly recommend visiting Mondo Verde if there isn't any budget restraint.

For additional information you can find the official Mondo Verde website.

Happy Travels!

Bulldog kind of day

I'm soooo bored

After a long day of eating great food, riding horses and playing with dogs... It's finally time to just relax. Tonight a nice funny movie. I'm really enjoying taking all these photos today.

Especially of Blue, the white bulldog. She is a real sweetheart of a dog, sadly she thinks that she is a lap dog.

Tomorrow should be quite interesting, Joris and I will go in to Maastricht and possibly meet a Brother who is a rather famous photographer. I've seen some of his work and it's magnificent. I would love to be able to make money from photography.

Should would be a wonderful way to keep the money flowing for travel. Ideas, ideas, eh? =)

Wanna buy some of my photos and keep me traveling? Drop me an e-mail, I'll give you a great deal =)

Down here on the Farm

Maastricht, Holland
Originally uploaded by kden604.
After spending the day wandering about taking pictures in Maastricht and Meerssen I find myself somewhere in Belgium. Maasmechelen actually, on the border between Belgium and Holland, but on the Belgian side.

I've got some serious hay-fever or dog-fever. I love Fenris the dog, whom I met last year. But me nose sure doesn't care for him, it's been quite runny and sneezing for a little while now. If I go outside for a couple hours it clears right up, it's driving me nuts.

Joris's girlfriend Natascha is a really nice girl. We all had dinner together, including her mother. We're at a beautiful farm house, there are horses, dogs, a turkey and numerous other wild little things running around.

If my nose wasn't so screwed it would be really blissful.

Meerssen Holland Tourism

Located in Limburg province, just a few kilometers outside of Maastricht is a small town called Meerssen. I would have never come out here if it hadn't been for a friend who lived here, but I've been back twice now and it's actually a nice relaxing little town.

The town itself, like most small towns, consists really of just one main road. There it's lined with shops where you can buy most anything, though they aren't the big name brand stores.

The local bakery bakes up some of the best breads and sweets and the people are friendly and thoughtful.

There are really only two things that stand out in my mind about visiting Meerssen and they are the Church and the Park.

The park is really beautiful, with an old stone bridge, some fountains, memorials and it's just really well kept. There is a pathway that leads around it so you can cycle or walk, or you can kick off your shoes and enjoy the well manicured lawns.

The moment you get off the train you will walk towards the street and see the park to your left. On the far side of the park is the old church which has an amazingly beautiful musical melody it plays several times through the day.

Unfortunately the town of Meerssen's website is only in Dutch and to be honest there isn't a great deal of touristic things to do here. But there are three camp sights and two hotels. If you are looking to save yourself a little money from staying in the Maastricht I think that Meerssen would be a beautiful choice of places to stay.

The train from Meerssen costs quite affordable and the ride is less than 10 minutes long to Maastricht. In addition it is a great gateway town to both Heerlen and Valkenburg which are further away from Maastricht.

Small towns often have a beauty that big cities seem to do away with as they develop. The atmosphere is almost always more relaxed, public open markets on the weekends are just a few reasons it's good to get out of the bigger cities when you travel and check out little gems like Meerssen.

Touring Maastricht Holland

Straddling both sides of the Maas river in Limburg, Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in the country. The cities has lots of amazing history to see all the way back to Roman times!

Luckily the people of Maastricht have taken great care to preserve their history and it's an integral part of the city. When relics and historical sights are found they are integrated in to new designs as not to destroy the original sites.

Holland itself is a really wonderful country, but if you travel through it for a while you will find a few places that stand out as something special. Maastricht is one of those cities where you can really feel at home and welcomed by the people.

Flower Market

Lots of open air cafes line the roads, open markets with flowers and food, bars and historical sights. Maastricht really has it all and it is personally my favourite city in the Netherlands and one of the most memorable from all of my travels.

Certainly there are some highlights to the city, perhaps too numerous to list in full. The highlights however are some of the grand churches, old bridges, the caves of Mount St. Pieter, and walking the old city wall and fortifications.

IMG_4058

The churches in the old quarter of the city are just fabulous. There are about three really worth taking a look at. Some of them have been used by multiple faiths in the past in addition to being built up from the ruins of roman temples.

IMG_0258

Saint Servatius bridge which takes you towards the old town if you are coming from the train station is the single oldest bridge in the Netherlands. It's a real beauty and is always full of cyclist and pedestrians.

Just outside the city you will find the caves of Mount St. Pieter, a huge labyrinth of passages. The sand stone caves are carved in to wonderful pieces of art by the monks who live in the monastery above. Tours of the caves can be arranged through local tour agents and the tourist information office. It really is one of the highlights of visiting Maastricht.

Surrounding the city is a series of old fortifications, walls and gates. Most of them now have been turned in to beautiful parks with running paths and walk ways. Taking an hour or two stroll and enjoying all the fountains, ponds, zoo and more will make a really great outing or picnic.

IMG_4064

Within an hours drive of Maastricht you take also visit some really beautiful towns, each with unique style and beauty. If you are interested in old churches and their history you will find some of the oldest churches and abbeys in many of the towns near and around Maastricht.

Visit Maastricht and you will really fall in love with it. Cafes, Bars, Night Scene, Shopping and Culture. Maastricht really has it all.

Caves of Mount St. Pieter - Maastricht Holland

Below Mount St. Pieter is some of the most amazing sights you will see anywhere in Holland. Tunnels systems run for miles and miles, full of charcoal art, carvings and a hidden V2 Rocket base.

Just on the out skirts of Maastricht Holland these caves can be toured as a group with a local tourist guide. There are over 20,000 passageways and hidden tunnels and a guide is an absolute necessity.

Most of the artwork was created by Monks who live on the monestary on top of the mountain. For years they have been using art to show their divine appreciation to the lord by depicting biblical scenes, as well as personal artistic expressions.

IMG_0249

These caves systems were also used during world war two as a bomb shelter by the locals. Interestingly you can see where people had gathered to eat, where provisions were left, and also where the monks stored their personal belongings.

It's a thrilling place to visit and probably the most memorable place I've visited in Western Europe.

A couple words of advice however. Bring extra batteries for your camera, the only light will come from candles, lamps and flash lights your tour group brings. So you will need to use your cameras flash quite a lot. Also, the ambient tempurature is around 7-9 celcious all year round and feels quite chilly as your walk around for several hours, so it might be advisable to bring a coat.

Maastricht is really a wonderous city, full of amazing beauty with a fabulous history. The city has a wonderful vibe this is only one of the many sights you should check out while you are there.

You are such a Munster Charlie Brown

German Trains
Originally uploaded by kden604.
Well after a fourty-five minute wait in Osnabruck I took a short stinky ride to Munster (Westf) Hbf. Where I got to wait another fourty minutes for my next train. But it's okay, and I am happy. Why you might ask?

Well I am on one of those double decker regional express trains and I am sitting on the top level. I have a single seat with no one beside me, no stinky people around me and they have semi-comfortable airplane type seats with a table that folds down from the seat in front of you along with a little metal foot rest.

This part of the journey will be about two hours long.

Departing Muster at: 1137
Arrival in Monchengaiadbach at: 1340

And don't ask me to try and say Monchengaiadbach either.

After that it's a very quick sprint to the next train with only a nine minute dash between this train and the next, leaving in Aachen around 1445.

Then I still have to go from Aachen to Maastricht. I haven't fully decided if I will take the bus or the train yet. The train is 8,70 euro and I need to switch trains once and it's only an hour long ride. My other alternative is a direct bus route with costs about 7,50 euro. I took the bus last time when I went from Maastricht to Aachen last year. So I think I will keep with that status quo for today and just stick with trains.

I expect to arrive in Maastricht around 1630-1640 assuming I don't miss a train or something silly like that.

Tentative Travel Plans for June 2007

Moo goes the cow
Originally uploaded by kden604.
I know I previous blogged about my travel plans in the new laptop article. However now things have firmed up and there is a few new twists and turns in the works.

Tomorrow I am heading from Vechta to Maastrict via Aachen. It'll be a long day on the slow trains. I take the slow trains because it saves quite a bit of money. I probably should write a tutorial explaining the German train system to travelers. But basically you can get to any place a whole bunch of ways. However your ticket will only be good for certain kinds of trains.

Basically you can buy an expensive ticket that allows you on those super high speed trains that Germans are so incredibly proud of. Or you can take the regional express trains and take a very long time to get to your destination for significant savings. Really it just comes down to how much money you have and how important your time is, or what your time is worth.

My time isn't worth too much; thusly I'm a slow train kind of guy. I really didn't know these little quirks about the train systems last time I was in Germany and I know I paid too much. But such is the life of a tourist!

Note to self: Write an article on travel in Germany with trains.

Ok, back to the point of this article.

I'm headed down to Maastricht Holland tomorrow to meet up with Brother Joris and his Girlfriend for a few days. I'm really looking forward to this and am excited to be going. Then suddenly and out of the blue I get an MSN Message from Kiko, my good Brazilian Swiss friend who speaks about 12 languages. I met him last year while in Prague and we really got along well and ended up traveling through a few more countries together before he had to head home. I believe we split up in Budapest if I recall correctly, but to be honest it's a little fuzzy where we parted ways.

So he invited me to meet him in Switzerland. Now considering it's to the south of Germany and there no necessity for me to go up the west side of Germany later I have the opportunity to travel up via Munich. Who's in Munich you might ask? Well, Vesna from Goa India of course.

So after Munich I have a deadline to arrive in Hamburg on July 1 or June 30. The Red Hot Chili Peppers concert starts at 7PM on July 1!

Additionally I have a airplane ticket booked for flying from Hamburg to Tallin Estonia on July 2. Quite a good deal if you ask me, 115 Euro taxes and ticket fee included. I'm flying with Estonian Airlines, the national carrier for Estionia.

If you are flying from Germany the cheapest flights all go from Hamburg to Estonia. If you take a flight from Frankfurt or Cologne you will undoubtedly just be taking a flight which ends up passing through Hamburg. The flights are only about 80 Euro more if you catch them from another city. But since the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert was in Hamburg it just seemed a nature place to purchase a ticket from.

So as you can see I'm working in a time frame of 2 weeks for this endeavor. Should be a blast.

Adventure Holland

Holland (The Netherlands) was really where I first started to enjoy myself. I was now starting to relax and find out what I really wanted from my travel experience. To be entirely honest though it wasn't until the end of my time in Holland when I "really" felt good about my trip. I met some of my Freemason Brethren and my whole world changed. Joris, thank you Brother.
