Corfu and the Pink Palace

Tirana, Albania

So yesterday I got on the ferry from Saranda, Albania to Corfu, Greece... It was a fast ferry ride, only about 40 minutes but the thing goes like a bat out of hell. I met a couple interesting people on the trip, one was an Irish guy turned American who was visiting his sister in Corfu.

When we arrived in Corfu we found a cafe and his sister did a quick driving tour of Cofu Town and dropped me off at the only hostel called the Pink Palace. Its got beds for 700 and with Kayaking, Quads, and lots of other services. The prices aren't too bad actually, but a little beyond what I would pay for... if it was a shorter trip and this was my only destination I would definitly do some of the stuff! But there are some beautiful mountains and trails around this area so I'm going off hiking for the day.

So the other person I met on the ferry was an overly religious young Albanian woman who wanted to come to Canada I'm pretty sure. Its pretty freaking spooky having a person you talked to for like 10 minutes say I love you and give you a necklace to remember her by... Kelly (the American) of course was laughing his ass off, he is in his 50s or so and a little too old for her, so I was the target.

It's just too funny when shit like that happens. It's right up there with Full Metal Jacket and "Me Love You Long Time."

So the hostel is pretty expensive, 25 Euro a night which is a killer, so I'm staying two nights only, then I'm going to head to main land Greece. I'm not sure exactly where yet, I have to go to the Ferry and find out. The hostel is about 20 minutes drive from Corfu Town itself and is rather isolated... with it being winter here there are few shops open and you'll be lucky to see anyone except a few people working in the hostel and the other guests (5).

There is this perma-drunk Swede here who is good for a laugh but he's pretty sad. I got up early around 6am and was sitting at the bar drinking some coffee, he walks in the door with a glass of Ouzo orders a fruit juice and a bottle of beer and tries to find a way in to town. From what I gather he is 37 and has been somewhat drunk for the past 12 years because some chick he met here in greece dumped him... The guy is pretty sad and seems to be very happy being a drunk... He openly said that it takes the serious edge off life and just makes everything easy to laugh at... Ahh the Interesting people you meet while traveling.

Anyways, I'm going to look at a map of Greece and see where I am exactly and then decide where I'm going tomorrow.

PS - Can't upload pictures here, it's just a dumb terminal, no access to a physical PC. =(

It's great to read your entries about Greece. I've traveled around quite a bit since I live here, but I've I'm afraid my "new eyes" are long buried after visiting so many places, learning the languages and having friends to take care of me in certain place. It's refreshing to hear your encounters and remember.
