Money Belt
Any traveler should know better than to keep all their money and documents in one place. Spread them around; keep some money at different locations so if you get mugged or lose some you won't be really screwed!
Your passport, debit, and credit cards are among the most important documents you have while traveling... Getting a money belt is cheap and a great security investment. Belts like this are worn across the chest or stomach and are under the shirt. You would be well advised to keep your things in a Ziploc bag within this also, a stinky sweaty passport and documents are a little gross.
As far as personal security is concerned... many people buy cheap wallets and put a few dollars in local currency within it... if you ever get robbed its very easy to hand it over in a hurry and there is a good chance the robber won't stick around to search the rest of you. Keeping money in your boot (under the insole) is another idea, I doubt many robbers will take the time to wait for you to take your shoes off, let alone actually want to check and see.
When traveling, always always make photocopies of all your documents so that you have them "just in case." Trying to deal with government offices inside Canada without legal documents is hard, doing it outside of Canada is much worse!
