This particular GPS unit I purchased in Trenton, Ontario in summer 2002 and it has been reliable and a whole lot of fun. I really got in to the whole "geo caching" thing for a little while...

I've taken this sucker up to the North Pole, and all over Canada and there are so many uses for it. Weather you are going for a day hike and want to mark where you left your car, or if you are mapping ATV/Snow mobile trails this is a great little gizmo.

Honestly, I'm not too sure how useful this will be on my trip, other than the fact it has most major cities around the world programmed in to it. But I think it will be sort of neat to post on my blog and say, "I'm in such and such place, xxxxx feet above sea level and about 6000 km from home :o)

Of course GPS's also work as a compass, which could be invaluable if you are lost... but make sure you take extra batteries!

My only critique of this item is that as with most LCD (liquire crystal display) devices the screens will move slow, or cease to display with the temperature is consistently very cold. While I was in the North Pole I went on a several hour hike and it was roughly -35C, if you kept the GPS inside your coat and pulled it out from time to time it was ok, but if you carried it in your hand, you were pretty much S.O.L.
